Simple Search


  • When doing a title search, ignore initial articles (A, An, The, and foreign equivalents when they are the first word of a title).
  • Enter the author's name in last name, first name order (e.g., search for 'Twain Mark' rather than 'Mark Twain')
  • For subject heading searches, enter the subject heading, omitting all punctuation.

To perform a Simple search:

  1. Type your search terms in the 1. Enter Search Terms: text box. 
  2. Select from the following search types in the 2. Choose a Search Type list box:
Title
Searches for the title of a work. Enter the exact title or beginning of the title. Returns an alphabetical list of matching records.
 
Journal Title
Searches for journal titles. Enter the exact title or beginning of the title. Returns an alphabetical list of matching titles.
 
Author
Searches for a personal name, company/organization name, or conference name in the author field(s) of the record. For personal names, enter the last name (surname) first. Results in a Headings Display.
 
Subject
Searches for exact Library of Congress Subject Headings. Returns a list of matching headings with subheadings. Results in a Headings Display.
 
Call Number
Searches for an item's call number. Enter the exact call number or beginning of the call number. Exact punctuation is required. Returns a list of matching call numbers.
 
Boolean (AND, OR, NOT)
Boolean searching is a type of keyword searching that allows you to combine search terms using the operators AND, OR, and NOT.
  • use AND, OR, NOT to combine search terms
  • use quotation marks to group search terms as a phrase
  • use ? to truncate: browser?
  • use parenthesis to combine search sets

    For example, to find information about writing on the Internet, you might type:

    (internet or "world wide web") and (writing or publishing)

  • enter words and/or phrases below;
  • use quotes to search phrases: "world wide web"
  • use + to mark essential terms: +explorer
  • use * to mark important terms: *internet
  • use ? to truncate: browser?
  1. If desired, select an option from the 3. Limit Your Search (optional): drop-down list.
  2. Click the Search button.

To search again from a list or item display, click on the button at the top of the screen. It will take bring up a new screen of the same search type as previously used, retaining any limits that are activated.
